Abstract

This very informal talk is about home, displacement, and song; it's also about race, place and urban space; and it's also about popular European cinema in the inter-war period. Its starting point is my scepticism about the usual equation between the idea of home and the claims of identity. I'll be showing three song performances from 1930s movies - Josephine Baker in Zou Zou, Paul Robeson in Song of Freedom, and Frehel in Pepe le Moko - and speculating about how we might think about some of these questions differently.
