The Brewster Stereoscope

The Brewster Stereoscope is the forerunner of later closed-bodied designs such as the Lestrade and the View-master. Stereographs slotted into an opening behind the front screen. A door at the top of the body could be opened to modulate the light. Focal distance was fixed, a shortcoming which prevented its satisfactory use by short or long sighted people and it was unwieldy in comparison with later light-weight models. The eye-piece is awkward, a reminder of the environment outside the stereograph. it lacks the viewing mask of the Holmes stereoscope
