Conversation Analysis and Applied Linguistics

Place: University of Newcastle
Dates: Two-day seminar; Tuesday 16 and Wednesday 17 July 2002
Aims: The objectives of the seminar are to:
- explore the nature of the relationship between Conversation Analysis and Applied Linguistics;
- identify and exemplify applications of CA methodology within the broad area of Applied Linguistics.
Themes which are expected to emerge include:
- application of CA methodology to the analysis of L1 child language development and L2 acquisition;
- application of CA methodology to the analysis of L2 classroom interaction;
- application of CA methodology to the analysis of disordered speech;
- application of CA methodology to the analysis of professional discourse, including medical and legal discourse;
- compatibility of CA and Applied Linguistics;
- use of quantification in CA and in Applied Linguistics;
- relevance of CA to developments in qualitative research in Applied Linguistics.

- Prof. Leo Van Lier, Monterey Institute of International Studies
Papers: Potential participants are invited to submit abstracts for seminar papers by no later than March 22. Participants will be invited to write up papers presented at the seminar for publication.
