LATEST NEWS: TRAVEL BURSARIES

We are delighted to announce that a small number of competitive travel bursaries (up to ten) of A$500 each will be provided to current students, postgraduates, artists or others seeking concession who register, or have registered, to attend the Interrogating Trauma conference. Postgraduate students will be given priority and the organising committee’s decision to allocate the 10 bursaries based on the evidence received will be final.

To apply for a bursary please send an expression of interest by email to m.broderick@murdoch.edu.au by 7 October, 2008. Applicants will be advised of their success, or otherwise, soon after.

Please note:

A copy of student or retiree identification, or other relevant documentation, must be forwarded with expression of interest to ensure eligibility.

A student is defined as a holder of student identification card from a recognised tertiary or secondary educational institution or international student card.

‘Other’ refers to other cases of justifiable and demonstrable concession, such as unemployed, low income, or employed in developing countries.

Getting there to Perth and getting around Perth

By Air

Western Australia is easily accessible by air.  There are regular flights to Perth from the major cities in Australia.  It takes approximately four hours by air to reach Perth from the east coast of Australia.

You can book your tickets at one of the following airlines that provide services to Western Australia:

Airport and Transport

Perth Airport is approximately half an hour away from the centre of Perth. 
Perth Domestic and International Airports

Please note that Perth Airport has separate terminals for international and domestic flights – Terminal 1 (International) and Terminals 2 & 3 (Domestic)

Specifically, the International Terminal is located on Horrie Miller Drive, which can be accessed off Tonkin Highway.  The Domestic Terminals are located on Brearley Avenue, which can also be accessed by exiting off Tonkin Highway.

 

Fremantle Airporter

The Fremantle Airporter service is available for passengers requiring transport to and from Fremantle.  For further information, visit the Fremantle Airporter website at www.fremantleairportshuttle.com.au

 

By Train

If you wish to travel by train then the Great Southern Rail  spans the entire continent from sea to sea.

 

Public Transport in Perth

Perth public transport information about buses, ferry and trains – Transperth

The Free Transit Zone or FTZ (for buses) and the SmartRider Free Transit Zone (for trains) operates within the Perth city boundaries. Passengers can travel within it on any bus or train* for free, as often as they want. Look for the logo on bus stops to identify the FTZ boundaries. Free Transit Zone (FTZ)

 

Taxis

Taxis are available from both the domestic and international terminals. A taxi trip from the airport terminals to Perth city centre will take 20 to 30 minutes.

All taxis are meter operated by time and distance, and operate twenty four hours a day. Taxis indicate they are vacant by illuminating their sign on the roof. At both airport terminals available taxis will wait at the taxi rank.

Getting to and from the City of Fremantle

Fremantle (referred to by locals as “Freo”) is a busy port and small cosmopolitan town south of the city of Perth (Perth is the capital city of the State of Western Australia). One of Western Australia’s key international centres of tourism, Fremantle is strongly multicultural and heritage and arts orientated. Most of the conference’s art and film activities will be located in Fremantle. Murdoch and Curtin universities, where the conference will be held, are easily accessible by public transport from Fremantle.

So where is Fremantle you may well ask?  Check out the visitor information for Fremantle and the Fremantle Visitor Centre both have all the information that you ever wanted to know.

Bus to/from universities

The Circle Route Bus 99 departs from the Fremantle Railway & Bus Station every 15 mins approx, with stops along Market Street, South Terrace and South Street. The ride to Murdoch University is 20 mins approx and 45 mins approx to Curtin University, depending on traffic conditions. To return to Fremantle Station take the Circle Route Bus 98 in the opposite direction.

Taxi from Fremantle

Taxis depart outside the Fremantle Railway & Bus Station and opposite the Fremantle Town Hall in Kings Square on William St. Taxis in Western Australia are all white and have distinctive signs

 

The CAT buses

The Freo CAT buses complete a circuit around the City of Fremantle every 10 minutes seven days a week and the trip is free.

Monday-Friday: 7:30 am – 6:30 pm, and until 9:00 pm on Friday
Weekend:  10:00 am – 6:30 pm.

A great way to quickly see the sights of Fremantle and get your bearings.
