Cultural History is a core unit for the BA in Communication & Cultural Studies.

Description: Cultural History deals with how, particularly in Europe, the concept of culture emerged along with modernity itself. The unit, then, is a history of the idea of culture, or more precisely, a genealogy of the idea. This begins with Hobbes and goes through the Enlightenment and into Romanticism. Central nineteenth century figures such Comte, Marx and Nietzsche are examined, as well as the early work of Michel Foucault.

Contact time: Lectures: 1.5 hours per week; seminars: 1 hour per week.

Notes: Fourth-year undergraduate, Honours and postgraduate students should enrol in the higher-level code (H523) for this unit. They are required to demonstrate advanced analytical skills and/or use of advanced research tools in assignments modified for this level.
